Newsweek Pushing Anti-U.S. Views Overseas
Just when you thought that things couldn't get any worse for Newsweek, a motorcycling blogger from New York, currently living in Tokyo, has revealed that the magazine's overseas issues sometimes feature blatant anti-U.S. provocations. (hat tip to Janet Levy)
The cover of a recent Japanese version of the magazine has a U.S. flag, its staff snapped in half stuffed in a garbage can, surrounded with trash with the headline, "Amerika ga shinda hi," which translates to "The day America died." The equivalent international version of the same issue has a picture of Bush on its cover and the headline "America Leads..But is Anyone Following?"
According to the blogger, who calls himself "Gaijinbiker," the cover story article in both editions is titled "Dream on, America." He says that the Japanese translation of the article's title is "America, the dream country, is rotting away."
Newsweek says the article describes the "world's rejection of the American way of life." It did not appear in the U.S. edition of the magazine.
As "Gaijinbiker" points out:
"It's one thing for Newsweek to actively promote the notion that America is a "dead", "rotting" country overseas. But it's quite another thing indeed to hide those efforts from its American readers. If Newsweek really thinks America is dead, and our flag belongs in the trash, why won't it tell us?"

Great post. RidingSun is a great blog. Newsweek is getting so bad that I am waiting for them to announce a new cable TV news network called C-BS Newsweek Channel
I'd like to say that I'm not surprised by the depths of self-loathing that the left possesses, but every once in a while, something like this takes my breath away. I hope a lot of people are questioning why they (either with knowledge or through apathy) allowed folks that do this to reach a position of prominence in our culture. I honestly think that the second and unstated front in the war on terror is the war against moles and fifth-columnists at home.
The idea of bashing a bland and all but worthless propaganda outlet like Newsweek into conformity with the official government fantasy line is a redundant overkill, just like everything else proposed by the failing Bush gang and its acolytes.
This effort would be laughable if it weren't so completely pathetic.
Newsweek is run by idiots. And anyone who believed the Koran in the toilet story is an idiot. Just what kind of Wonder Toilets do they have down there at Guantanamo? If I flush more than 3 pieces of tissue down mine I have to call a plumber.
Where were all those smart aleck Bloggers when this ridiculous story was run past them?
Have you noticed that the story is now "desecrated the Koran" instead of "Flushed the Koran?" I have questioned enough people about this ridiculous story that they have apparently moved to the cover their A mode.
I don't really find it suprising that people who torture these prisoners throw Korans in the toilet. Why wouldn't they? If you're in the business of humiliating muslims as muslims (which is indisputable at Gitmo and elsewhere), trashing the Koran would obviously come to mind. (Before, say, smearing menstral blood on peoples' faces, sexually taunting devout men, etc.)
By the way, marilyn, is it only idiots who believe the other dozen or so media sources (apart from and before Newsweek) who have reported the same thing over the past year and a half (since those Brits were released)?
These days, the truth is only ever revealed by accident, and then it's swiftly swept back under the carpet, presumably because Americans are too weak to handle reality.
I found the Newsweek cover article by Andrew Moravcsik which Newsweek hid from American readers by omitting it from its US domestic edition but printing it in its International edition (January 31, 2005 issue) as “Dream On America” http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6857387/site/newsweek/ and in its Japanese edition as “The Day America Died.”
Moravcsik’s article quotes Bush’s inaugural and says his words in it represent a “delusional” America. I.e., Newsweek does indeed regard the November 2004 election as the day that America died.
It quotes (25 words) arch-moonbat George Monbiot: “George Monbiot, a British public intellectual, speaks for many when he says, ‘The American model has become an American nightmare rather than an American dream.’”
Moravcsik’s article opines (53 words): Blinded by its own myth, America has grown incapable of recognizing its flaws. For there is much about the American Dream to fault. If the rest of the world has lost faith in the American model—political, economic, diplomatic—it’s partly for the very good reason that it doesn’t work as well anymore.
Carl lives in an alternate universe where physics operates differently and books can be flushed down toliets with aplomb. Nothing more needs be said to illustrate the insanity of the troll's position.
Newsweek puts, what ForNow points out, in their international edition, and they expect people to believe Toilette-Gate was a mistake.
IT'S OBVIOUS, THEY ARE LYING WHORES, TRYING TO SHAPE OPINION , AND NOT JOURNALISTS AT ALL!
Carl, you casually ignore the fact that the "devout men" who reside at Gitmo are imprisoned for things more serious than jaywalking.
Interesting how most lefties, you included, love to wring their hands red over enemy prisoners being humiliated by the U.S. but aren't nearly as passionate when terrorists (like most Gitmo prisoners) target and kill American and Iraqi soldiers and civilians and torture and behead innocents.
See the nice Nepalese beheading video, Carl--your blood will flash-freeze watching "devout" f*ckers from the same school as Gitmo prisoners cut the throats of their conscious hog-tied victims.Your mind will all but shut down as you watch in horror the "devout" mens' victims writhe and gasp through their slit throats, choking on their own blood before the "devout" Muslim men saw off their heads and hold them up to the camera for a "trophy shot"--all the while chanting, "God is Great!"
That is the essence of the Islamist enemies we face. That is the mindset of the Islamists imprisoned at Gitmo.
If in between wolfing down their U.S.-provided culturally correct meals, reading their U.S.-provided Korans, kicking around their U.S.-provided soccer balls they're made to endure some non-physically-violent humiliation, good.
BTW, Carl--what should a "devout" Muslims' punishment be for masturbating at female guards? This vile practice is a staple at Gitmo.
If anything, Gitmo guards are incredibly restrained and professional, given the nature of their prisoners.
