Anniversary of a Martyr

Pedro Luis Boitel was a student leader at the University of Havana who opposed Fulgencio Batista. He subsequently opposed Fidel Castro's tyranny and was imprisoned. Boitel began a hunger strike on April 3, 1972 to protest abuses in prison. He died 53 days later on May 25.

Cuban prisoners of conscience have named human rights organizations in Boitel's honor. An account of today's prison abuses by prisoner of conscience Jorge Luis García Pérez has recently been published, titled Boitel Lives.
